Welcome to Dundas Valley Sports

Dundas Valley Sports News

Quote from the "If you grew up in Dundas you remember when ..." facebook group.

It’s pretty sad to find out the Community Papers are not covering sports anymore. There is no longer a sports section in the Dundas Newspaper or any other community paper.
There will no longer be any coverage of any sports events or game results being published. As far back as I can remember that’s where everybody looked to find out how the local sports teams were doing.
I have scrap books of all the games I ever played or my kids ever played. They were made from pictures and write-ups I cut out of the Community Paper right back to when it was the Dundas Star.

It’s a pretty sad day knowing now that whether it’s baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer or any other sporting event the young kids can’t look forward to seeing a write-up or picture of themselves in the local community paper.

Steve Aglor September 20, 2018

This started a discussion that brings us here. Steve Aglor and Bill Curran are putting together this website as a place to publish scores, stories and pictures just for Dundas local sports: Hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, badminton - all sports - even darts!

Dundas Sports Wall of Fame class of 2018 announced

Aglor, Clasen, Eldridge, Genovese, Myers in second group honoured

Dundas Valley Sports News

Four years after the inaugural class of inductees was announced, the second group of Dundas Sports Wall of Fame honourees has been chosen.

Steve Aglor (hockey), Helmut Clasen (motorcycle racing), Deborah Lee Eldridge (golf), Nick Genovese (blind golf) and Bob Myers (hockey referee) will officially be inducted this fall or winter, after completion of renovations to J.L. Grightmire Arena.

Aglor, who has been a participant and leader in Dundas' hockey community for more than 50 years, said induction onto the wall of fame is an honour he dreamed of when it was created just over four years ago, but one he didn't really expect to get, considering all the great athletes from the Valley Town.

I never missed a year of hockey in Dundas, playing or coaching ... since I was five years old."
Steve Aglor

And it's a fitting class for Aglor to be inducted with, as he has connections to a couple of other inductees.

"Nick Genovese sang at our wedding," Aglor said. "Everybody knows Bob Myers."

After starting Dundas minor hockey at the age of five, Aglor played Jr. B for the Dundas Blues from 1971-74 then joined the Dundas Merchants for three seasons.

He coached novice and midget rep hockey teams from 1987 to 2001, joined the Dundas Blues Jr. C executive in 1995, and was Blues head coach from 1999 to 2009, the longest term of any head coach in recent memory. He's also served as general manager, director of hockey operations and club president, overseeing a number of transitions in an ongoing effort to keep the historic junior hockey club in Dundas.

Clasen was inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2007, and is referred to as "a true Canadian champion and tremendous ambassador for motorcycling and for Canada." Among his long list of victories over six decades of racing are 14 Canadian National Offroad titles, including a win in 2000 at the age of 65.

Eldridge has been Mohawk College's golf coach for eight years, and played on five different tours in Canada and the United States from 1991 to 2001, including a stint on the LPGA in 1986. Eldridge won 10 professional tournaments, and added 88 top-10 finishes.

Those who qualify will then move on to compete in the worlds in Abu Dhabi in two years. Qualifiers for provincials start again in 2019.

The Seahawks are now accepting applications for four athletes this year.

Dundas speedskating sisters enjoy competition and community

Hayley and Sarah Murray represent local club at Ontario Winter Games

Dundas Valley Sports News

Hayley and Sarah Murray became competitive short track speedskaters quite naturally as their father Mike has nearly 40 years experience as a national level competitor and coach.

By the time the Dundas girls were six years old they were members of the Hamilton Speed Skating Club — co-founded by their father — and frequently hanging around on the ice because he was there. They were soon making friends there with some kids their age and learned to skate on the specialized long blades.

Competition, a drive to improve their times, and a special sense of community have kept Hayley, 14, and Sarah, 13, on speed skates. Both girls have set new personal standards this season and are looking forward to more.

The sisters compete in a competitive provincial racing series — comparable to rep or travel hockey — that skaters have to qualify for. Hayley and Sarah both picked up several first, second and third place finishes in provincial series events this past season.

They both raced at the Ontario Winter Games for the first time earlier this month, each finishing within the top 10 overall of their respective age groups. Sarah finished second in the 400-metre final for 12 and 13-year-olds. Hayley finished fourth in the 500-metre final and fifth in the 1,500-metre final for 14 and 15-year-olds. Both of Hayley's times were personal bests.

Dundas' Stefan Strecker named to baseball league's top 100 players of past century

Pitcher has played 15 seasons with Brantford Red Sox

Dundas Valley Sports News

Dundas' Stefan Strecker has stood out during 15 seasons with the powerhouse Brantford Red Sox of the Intercounty Baseball League, setting high standards as a starter and reliever.

Now, as Strecker prepares for his final season on the mound to mark the IBL's 100th anniversary, he's been named to the league's list of top 100 players of the last century.

"It's humbling," said Strecker. "There are a lot of great players on that list, and a lot of great players were left off."

He has already accomplished the rare feat of pitching 15 seasons with the same team and was part of the Brantford franchise that won seven league titles between 2006 and 2013 — including six in a row.

Hockey and history mingle in Dundas Museum

Dundas Valley Sports News

It's a small display, but it's dense with history and relevance.

As a prelude to the Allan Cup tournament, which opens at the J.L. Grightmire Market Street Arena in two weeks, the Dundas Museum and Archives — one of this area's underappreciated little gems — will be the temporary home to the Cup itself until at least next Wednesday. Fans can have their picture taken with the trophy, which will be presented to the senior hockey champions of Canada after the final April 19.
